Butte College is one of 32 campuses throughout California that received support this school year to expand and create services to support undocumented students and their families from the new California Campus Catalyst Fund. The grant of $125,000 increases support for undocumented students and their families on campuses representing the state’s three public higher education systems: California Community Colleges, California State University, and the University of California.
The goal of the Catalyst Fund grant at Butte College is to institutionalize support services for undocumented students. The primary project goal is the creation of the Butte College UndocuStudent Support Center (USSC), that increases support services available at Butte College and provides the necessary resources and support to undocumented students, families, staff, and faculty. In order to sustain these efforts, Butte College is hiring a full-time Student Success Specialist who will assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of the USSC programs and activities designed to increase undocumented student retention, persistence, and completion at Butte College.
“Butte College welcomes undocumented students and will provide resources to help students succeed through this grant,” said Brad Zuniga, Butte College Associate Dean, Recruitment, Outreach and Orientation.
In recent years, California has expanded in-state and state-based financial aid, and undocumented immigrants now qualify for career licensing in law, medicine, real estate, and 37 other professions according to Zuniga.
